The Before You Go channel runs through fourteen things worth doing on São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores: the twin lakes at Sete Cidades, the warm iron-red pool at Terra Nostra, the tea fields at Gorreana and the cozido stewed underground at Furnas.
It’s bright, quick and well organised, with sensible notes on driving times and when to go. In other words, it’s everything my own trip was not.
Why I keep rewatching it
I watched it the week before I flew out, then spent most of my five days in the Azores inside a cloud. Sete Cidades, for me, was a white wall and the sound of cows. So I rewatch it to see what was behind the fog. It has become a sort of consolation film, and a promise to myself that I’ll go back one spring with a raincoat and slightly lower expectations.
